Herbalicious Green Smoothie
The Herbalicious Green Smoothie is both delicious and refreshing… I promise!
I am so excited to share this gorgeous green smoothie recipe with you. I whipped it up this past weekend for lunch and knew I had to share it immediately, it’s that good!
When I created this beginner friendly smoothie (yup, for those of you who have not ditched fruit in your green smoothies this yummy goodness is for you) I wanted something refreshing and filling at the same time.
Now here is what I did differently and quite by mistake. I sliced a lime in half and popped it directly into the vitamix skin included. Gulp! Not wanting to dig through all the frozen greens and fruit to extract it, I simply shrugged my shoulders and thought what the heck, I love the taste of lime.
Best mistake EVER! The lime peel give this smoothie an added refreshing taste which balances the richness from the almond butter and avocado. I swear from now on, I’m keeping the peel on. I got curious on the nutrient content and benefits of citrus peels and did a little digging. Below are are 5 interesting facts.
Zest or Peel benefits
- The rinds are more nutrient dense than the flesh
- Packed with immune-boosting Vit C, bone building calcium and antioxidants
- Provide potassium, which helps keep blood pressure in check
- Contains Limonene, a phytochemical that may have anti-cancer effect
- helps with heartburn
HOW DO I MAKE A GREEN SMOOTHIE RECIPE?
All you need to make a delicious green smoothie is a high speed blender, fruit (if using) and leafy greens. When you are newer to green juices add a tad more fruit and gently wean down the amount for less “natural” sugar. Follow my simple tips below.
- 1-2 cup of leafy greens of your choice
- 1 cup of coconut water or nut milk water
- Fruit, such as frozen mango, pineapple, peaches and bananas
- Avocado for healthy fat
- Nut butter for protein
- Chia and hemp seeds for protein
- Serve smoothie immediately for maximum nourishment and taste.
The Herbalicious Green Smoothie is now my absolute favourite! My husband and girls are huge fans too, even our golden retriever approved. Well, she enjoyed licking the spoon – although that might be because of the almond butter, she is a huge fan!
Seriously though, I’ve been drinking green smoothies for well over 15 years now. They are the only beverage which provides enough vitamins, minerals, fibre, protein and is also a meal in itself.
Cheat tips
I asked my hubby to pick up a few groceries for me the other day. When he couldn’t reach me on the phone he called our daughter’s gizmo watch to ask if I was serious about buying frozen greens. You see, having a few bags of frozen greens in the freezer gives you a back-up for those days when you haven’t gone shopping, or have to choose between a yummy kale salad or a smoothie.
- keep a couple bags of frozen greens on hand
- when fresh mangos, peaches, and nectarines are in season, buy extra to slice and freeze
- husk fresh coconuts in bulk and reserve the water for your smoothies (will keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days in a sealed glass jar), cut the coconut meat into chunks and freeze
- In a pinch, keep bottled coconut water in the fridge
- freeze a handful of fresh parsley next time you buy it fresh
I encourage you to give it a try, and if you are new to the world of green smoothies you will LOVE this one.
The best green smoothie ever!
- 2 cup leafy greens fresh or frozen, I used a mix of chard and spinach
- 1 cup coconut water or coconut milk for a creamier texture
- 1/2 lime peel left on
- 1/2 cup frozen mango
- 1 peach, chopped previously frozen
- 1 small handful parsley (approx 8 sprigs)
- 1 inch fresh ginger optional
- 1 heaping tbsp almond butter or other nut/seed butter of choice
- 1 tbsp avocado optional
- 1 tsp hemp seeds optional
- 1 tsp chia seeds optional
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until creamy, adding more coconut water, or distilled water to thin it out. Or, more mango to thicken. Serve immediately!
- swap out mango for other stone fruit
- equally delicious without hemp, chia seeds and avocado or ginger
