Lemon Poppy Seed Bliss Balls
These lemon poppy seed bliss balls are a delicious nutritious snack that can be made in less than 5 minutes.
We have a good friend visiting from New Zealand and he’s heard all about my bliss balls. When he asked about trying my Simple Lemon Bliss Ball recipe while he was in town I naturally said yes – on the condition he made them himself to prove how easy the recipe is make.
I took this as an opportunity to create a whole new recipe I had in mind using macadamia nuts and poppy seeds.
Bliss Balls vs Energy Balls?
Honestly they are one of the same. And I use both names depending on my mood! Basically, they are a raw treat with any combination of nuts, seeds, nut butters, coconut and dried fruit rolled up into balls, or cut into bars.
I like to eat a bliss ball after a workout, in between meals when I’m feeling a tad hungry, when I have a sweet craving and in place of dessert. Our friend and my husband both like them with an espresso and my girls love them as a snack in the school lunches!
Healthy
I like to have a few healthy treats on hand at all times. And let me tell you, this recipe will be one that I’ll be making again and again they are that yummy!
Loaded with vibrant lemon flavour and incredibly satisfying these bite size bliss balls will soon become your new obsession. Seriously, they are mine!
If you’re looking for a healthy snack for that mid afternoon slump, or a healthy dessert alternative, this recipe is a great option.
I created this recipe using macadamia nuts, almonds and unsweetened shredded coconut making them completely grain-free, and uses medjool dates as the sweetener. These will not only satisfy your sweet tooth but are filled with protein and healthy fats to keep you full!
A few notes on the recipe:
These lemon poppy seed bliss balls are made with Meyer lemons, if you cannot find them you can use traditional lemons, just reduce the amount of zest or they will be more tart.
Lemon Poppy Seed Bliss balls are completely grain-free, and don’t require any additional oil to bind them together. Macadamia nuts are ‘soft’ nuts and help bind the balls together nicely.
The dough should be easily form into balls when you roll it in your hands without falling apart.
If you find your dough is a little crumbly when you press it between your fingers, it means you need to add some more liquid to help it stick. Simply add a tbsp of water, lemon juice or medjool water (if soaking your dates).
If you find your dough is too sticky, don’t worry, you will be rolling the balls into shredded coconut. You want the coconut to stick easily to the outside. They will firm up nicely in the refrigerator.

high in fiber, highly addictive, and delicious!
- 1/2 cup organic peanut butter
- 1 1/2 cup medjool dates pits removed (12-16)
- 1 cup pumpkin seeds
- 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
- 2/3 cup roasted cashews
- 1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
- 2 tbsp hemp seeds optional
Add medjool dates to a food processor, pulse to break them down into small chunks. Add remaining ingredients minus 1 tbsp shredded coconut. Blend until the ingredients start to stick, don't over blend, you want to keep a crunch.
Sprinkle the remaining shredded coconut over the mixture.
Scoop out mixture and roll into a ball. Aim for a golf ball size. Place on a plate and refrigerator until firmed. Store in a sealed glass container in the refrigerator, or the freezer.*
- if your dates are hard and dry, soak them first, reserve the water to add to the mixture as needed to help the balls stick
- If freezing, remove a couple each morning to thaw before eating (Serena still likes her frozen!)
- don't over blend, you want to keep some crunch
