Let’s talk digestion 101. You are not what you eat
You are probably thinking, hang on a second, that’s not what I’ve always been told.
Not to fret, you are partially correct, what you put inside your body does count.
But… and here is where we go deep.
It’s what you digest that matters the most.
So what exactly does this mean?
Let me tell you a little story
For the last 25+ years I’ve eaten a pure plant based diet. I ate no refined sugars, didn’t drink soda and never ate fast food or junk food.
I proudly fueled my body with pure whole foods. Yet I still suffered from IBS, severe brain fog, adrenal fatigue, SIBO, hormone complications, and severe bloating.
In fact my bloating was so bad, I was once asked by a salesperson in lululemon when my due date was. Yup my bloating was that bad. At times I truly looked like I was 6-8 months pregnant. Sigh! You can imagine how horrified and embarrassed I felt.
I’ve spent years exploring different diet theories and testing out various nutrition protocols with very little relief. I followed strict elimination diets before giving it all up and figured out this simple solution.
Ferrari vs. Dump Truck
Think of a super sexy Ferrari and a dump truck driving down the road. The Ferrari ride is smooth, fast and powerful. Whereas the dump truck is slow, rough and requires a lot of energy to move.
The ferrari is your fibre, fresh organic fruits and vegetable, legumes and grains.
The dump truck is comprised of fats and protein: avocado, nuts, seeds, chia, hemp seeds, olive oil, eggs, dairy, any meat, fish or poultry and any other oils.
Now picture a ferrari trying desperately to pass the dump truck, but can’t?
Fibre vs. Fat and proteins
Pure plant foods are rich in fiber and pass easily from your stomach to your small intestine. This is where all the magic happens: digestion occurs and you body is able to absorb all the powerful vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutrients.
Fibre rich foods are intimately tied with the importance of our healthy gut microbes. A well balanced diet with fibre literally feeds and makes these bacteria thrive. These bacteria strains lower inflammation throughout the body and aid in digestion.
Fats and proteins take much longer to digest and therefore linger in our small intestine. Creating a potential back up for fibre rich foods. While beneficial and equally important in a well balanced nutrient dense diet they shouldn’t be the first thing you eat in the morning, or with each meal. They just might be the culprit causing you unnecessary gas and bloating.
As fruit and veggies get held up in your stomach they ferment and can cause unnecessarily gas and bloating. This might also be causing brain fog and lethargy.
Your body is your temple
Honey, your body is your beautiful temple. You can be eating the most perfect, organic, plant based diet, but if your body isn’t actually breaking down what you eat (digesting) properly… you are literally starving your body of all the beneficial vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that you are trying so hard to include!
