Health Benefits of Maca:

If Maca is new to you, this is a fantastic superfood to introduce into your every day diet.  You can typically find it in most health food stores, I even came across an organic bag of Maca at homegoods here in Seattle. Here is a link to my favourite Maca powder you can easily purchase from Amazon.

This powerful superfood has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal properties.  It is native to the Andes of Peru, comes from the cruciferous vegetable family and appears similar to a radish. Maca is one of my favourite and most of often used adaptogens (a name given to herbs, plants and other natural substances that help our bodies naturally adapt to stressors). I take it for both hormonal health reasons and the incredibly dense micronutrients and antioxidant benefits.

  • packed full of micronutrients and antioxidants
  • improves female sexual health
  • balances hormone levels, specifically estrogen levels
  • boots male fertility
  • boosts energy, mood and memory

You can read more about this incredible adaptogen here.

I love making Maca Monkey Energy Balls on a weekend with my girls so there is a healthy snack available for their school lunches, and in Serena’s case an after school snack. Store them in the fridge and whenever your sweet tooth beckons you’ll have a healthy solution. Be sure to try my Hazelnut Truffle Bliss Balls.

Ingredients
  • ¼ cup cashews
  • ¼ cup hazelnuts
  • ½ cup almonds
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 9 dates pitted and soaked in warm water
  • Pinch Himalayan salt
  • 1 tbsp maca
  • date water
Instructions
  1. After pitting dates, place into a bowl of warm water to soften. Once soft, remove from water and set aside. Reserve the water.

  2. In your food processor add hazelnuts, almonds and cashews and grind until a ‘butter’ texture forms -- approx 1 minute. Then add dates, raw cacao, chia seeds, hemp seeds, coconut oil, vanilla extract and sea salt and continue to blend until mixture gets sticky and mixture starts to form a ball, approx 1 minute. Add some of the date water as needed if you need the mixture to be stickier.

  3. Using a tsp size, roll mixture into balls with the palms of your hands, then roll the balls in the shredded coconut until evenly coated.

  4. Place energy balls on a baking sheet, lined with parchment paper, and refrigerate for 30 minutes -1 hour.
  5. Keep fresh by storing in a glass container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
