Monday Motivation: Fall Equinox

March and September each contain one of the only two days when daylight and darkness are in near-perfect harmony no matter where you live. This year the fall equinox occurs at 12:50am PST Monday September 23rd.

What does this mean?

The word equinox translates to “equal light”. For one day the sun and earth are in complete balance. 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness (give or take a few minutes). As we journey to the end of the year we have less daylight hours and more darkness until the winter equinox occurs in December.

The historical meaning of the autumn equinox

Traditionally, the autumn equinox has been a time for cultures around the world to celebrate the harvest of important crops. It’s a time our ancestors celebrated the benefits of all their hard work and labor.

Mother nature gifted those who respected her with an abundance of food for the cold months to come.

Now, in a society where we are encouraged to overextend ourselves and constantly keep doing more, it’s easy to forget the importance of this special time of year. But the universe is nudging us to reflect, to rest, and to become more present; at least for today.

What this means to you

Finding balance is something many of us aspire to feel. Yet, what really is balance? If you look closer at Mother Nature, nothing is really perfectly balanced, there is a constant flow – where change and growth occur. It’s in this perfectly imperfect state that harmony occurs.

The last 9 months you grew and took the necessary steps to become your most authentic self. Now is your time to honor all your efforts and intentions. Go deeper and reflect on what this means to you. Are you in the position you wanted to be in 9 months ago? Have you grown as your had hoped?

Autumn is the time of year we create internal space for what’s to come. This is the time to be quiet and listen, and manifest our desires. In winter we rest, we heal, and we grow stronger.

Honor abundance and shift your consciousness from one of lacking to one of living an abundant and fulfilled life. Recognize and celebrate all you have.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to be more present:

Journal

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What needs healing in your body?
  • Are you willing to be open to new opportunities?
  • Are your relationships making you happy?
  • How can you deepen your intuitive knowing?
  • What if anything do you need to release if it no longer serves you?
  • Are you taking time to reflect and quiet your mind?
  • How are you bringing joy and play into your life?
  • How is your relationship with self-love?

Meditate

Use a guided meditation and ask yourself any of the above questions and see what comes up. Listen to my favourite meditation playlist to inspire you here.

Practice Forgiveness

Forgive yourself for any wrongdoings that are eating away at your spirit. Release negative self-talk and return to kindness and love. Look at your relationships. Use forgiveness to help dissolve any mistakes that someone has made either consciously or unconsciously, in person, by words, expressions or actions. Those mistakes no longer own you, weigh you down or consume you.

Light a candle and repeat these words, ” I release you, you no longer have control over me”.

Gratitude Practice

At the dinner table share all you are grateful for with your loved ones. It could be something as simple as the sun shined today, or my evening commute home was a breeze. Speak your gratitude for all that you are and all that you have. This is a growth mindset and by practicing it on a regular basis it will bring you incredible joy. Read more about starting a gratitude practice here.

I encourage you to take some time on the Fall Equinox (September 23rd) to acknowledge your life journey and path. In doing so, you are honoring not only your own growth, but the ancient wisdom that has served our health and wellness for thousands of years. We need to slow down and celebrate more often as we journey to our ultimate destination.
