My morning ritual starts with lemon water
My morning ritual starts everyday with 24-32 ounces of room temperature water. I add fresh squeezed lemon juice and a pinch of salt (celtic sea salt or pink himalayan salt). In a pinch if I’m travelling, or out of fresh lemons I add a couple drops of doTERRA Lemon essential oil. In the winter I often prefer my water hot – not boiling hot. If it’s a hot summer morning I drink it at room temperature – absolutely no ice… room temp is where you get the most hydration benefits.
On weekends I take the time to pre-make a wellness tonic for the week ahead. It contains lemon, turmeric and ginger. I store it in a sealed glass container in the refrigerator. This is one of my absolute favourite time saving health hacks. During busy weekday mornings I can quickly add a shot of the pre-made elixir to my morning water.
Adding fresh squeezed lemon juice is also a great way to add a little Vit C to your water – any time of the day. I’m not talking about the plastic yellow bottles of ‘lemon juice’ you can find your supermarket, I’m talking about the real fruit that grows on trees.
Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning helps to flush the digestive system and rehydrates our bodies. When I’m on the go, I carry Lemon and Grapefruit essential oils in my purse and add a couple drops to the water I drink throughout the day. When I’m teaching barre or taking a hot yoga class I add an extra 16-24 oz of water to my daily intake.
Benefits of Lemon Juice
- Vitamin C helps jump start the immune system, supporting our bodies natural defense system in fighting colds and flu
- Lemon juice turns alkaline inside our bodies. When our bodies become more acidic, they are more prone to disease. So by drinking a glass of water with fresh squeezed lemon or lemon essential in it is a simple and a tasty way of balancing pH levels
- Drinking lemon water on a regular basis on an empty stomach in the morning assists in removing overall acidity in your body, including uric acid in the joints which is one of the main causes of inflammation and pain
- Drinking a daily glass of warm lemon water assists with indigestion, heartburn, bloating and embarrassing gas (yup that’s been me)
- Healthy skin? Yes it helps with that too! Vitamin C helps reduce blemishes and wrinkles. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps our skin to stay blemish free. Making lemon water part of your daily routine not only tastes refreshing but also keeps our skin glowing by supporting the purification of blood and encourages the growth of new blood cells
Do you ever have the need to brush your teeth mid day, perhaps have an unpleasant taste in your mouth? Did you know lemon water gets rid of the white film on your tongue that often grows while we sleep, but also after consuming any high carbohydrate or sugary foods. This white film is made of bacteria and decaying food that causes bad breath. YUCK!
