Power Green Smoothie

I’m a huge fan of eating my breakfast, but on days when I’m in a pinch this is my go to breakfast smoothie. I call it the power green because of the added chia, flax and hemp seeds, which provide a powerful punch of protein, omega fatty acids and minerals. These teeny tiny seeds offer an abundance of health benefits, including valuable Omega-3 fatty acids.

There’s something psychologically beneficial drinking a green smoothie. I just feel that much better knowing I’m getting incredible healthy benefits. The pineapple and cilantro give it a delicious refreshing taste. I know there are a few of you out there who are not cilantro fans (my older daughter included), simply omit the cilantro.

Chia seeds are known for their naturally high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, making them a great alternative from fish oil for those on a plant based diet. Chia provides a high level of antioxidants, and is considered a complete protein – a great alternative if you are vegan.

Flax seeds are almost as rich in Omega-3 fatty acids as Chia, and provide a high amount of fiber. Be sure to grind your flax seeds before using as these tiny seeds are virtually impossible to digest when whole. You can also find pre-ground flax in most supermarkets. If you have whole flax seeds be sure to store them in a sealed container in the freezer as they quickly can go rancid.

Hemp seeds are an easily digestible plant based protein source and contain all 10 essential amino acids, which adds them among the rare plant-based foods that provide complete protein.

This is definitely a meal replacement as it contains healthy fats, protein, fiber, and carbohydrates all in one glass. If you are having this post workout or as a late morning or afternoon snack, save the other half for the following day. Just give it a good shake and easy breezy, you have a healthy snack for 2 days.
