Purple Haze Smoothie

, ,

Serena created this Purple Haze Smoothie one day after school. She kept with our basic must have ingredients for a nutrient dense after school snack; healthy fats, greens, and protein but added a handful of extra berries to create the magical colour she wanted. She’s been watching A LOT of Harry Potter lately, and her intention was to create a very wizard looking smoothie.

You can absolutely boost your health with this Purple Power Superfood Smoothie. It contains berries rich in antioxidants, plus acai powder for a superfood boost. I like keeping Acai powder on hand rather than the frozen packets you typically find at the supermarket. But those are absolutely an option to use. Especially here in the US you can find unsweetened organic frozen Acai at Trader Joes. It is a superfood you can easily incorporate into your smoothies and smoothie bowls.

There is certainly something very magical about this Purple Haze Smoothie, did you know the darker the fruit or vegetable the more nutrient dense it is? It’s a scientifically-proven fact that the darker the food, the higher the antioxidant level. Antioxidants have the ability to keep you looking younger, longer.

So why is Acai so good for you?

  • It is referred to having more antioxidants than any other fruit.
  • It contains medium chain fatty acids, including oleic acid (omega-6) and linoleic acid (omega-9 fatty acids), which are thought to reduce LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol. These healthy fats promote both heart and skin health.
  • It contains vital minerals, including potassium, iron, and magnesium.
  • It contains plant compounds that are thought to be anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer by protecting the body from free radical damage.

The purple pigment found in blueberries and blackberries contains flavonoids, including resveratrol, which can help decrease blood pressure and fights cancer. But most people know or resveratrol for it’s incredible anti-aging and powerful skin health boosting properties. Chia seeds

Known for their naturally high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, making them a great alternative from fish oil for those on a plant based diet. Chia provides a high level of antioxidants, and is considered a complete protein – a great alternative if you are vegan.

Flax seeds

Almost as rich in Omega-3 fatty acids as Chia, and provide a high amount of fiber. Be sure to grind your flax seeds before using as these tiny seeds are virtually impossible to digest when whole. You can also find pre-ground flax in most supermarkets. If you have whole flax seeds be sure to store them in a sealed container in the freezer as they quickly can go rancid.

Hemp seeds

An easily digestible plant based protein source and contain all 10 essential amino acids, which adds them among the rare plant-based foods that provide complete protein.

This is definitely a meal replacement as it contains healthy fats, protein, fiber, and carbohydrates all in one glass. If you are having this post workout or as a late morning or afternoon snack, save the other half for the following day. Just give it a good shake and easy breezy, you have a healthy snack for 2 days. For your children, split it into 2 – 3 covered mason jars, store in the fridge for an easy after school snack.
