The secret to ditching dieting for good
Are you ready to have a healthy and enjoyable relationship with food? I assume you are if you are reading this post. First I want to thank you. Yes you read that correctly. I want to thank you for taking your health seriously and making it a priority in your life.
Keep reading because I’m going to share the secret to ditching dieting for good.
It starts with your mindset, thoughts and beliefs on what healthy is. Healthy is not a number on a scale. It’s not the size of your waist or the size of your clothes. Nor is it the latest diet trend or program. Healthy is what makes you feel vibrant, energized, joy, radiant and love. It what makes you feel the best version of yourself. There is no one-size fits all approach. There is no one trend or program that works for everyone. There is only your uniqueness and that is what I call bio-individuality.
Create simple daily practices
Take a look at all areas of you day. Your morning, lunchtime, afternoon, dinnertime and evening routines. What are easy, sustainable healthy practices you can implement and stick to? Take into account habits which enhance your overall health and wellness not just the size of your waistline.
Morning
For me, my morning routine sets the tone for the rest of my day. I love morning cuddles with my girls (fur baby included). After tongue scraping and brushing my teeth, I hydrate with fresh lemon water. At some time in the morning I meditate for 5-20 minutes, move my body either with a long walk, barre or yoga class. I spend time outdoors with Luna and I nourish my body with a healthy breakfast. Mornings are when I love to write in a gratitude journal, sometimes my journal time expands into a full 20 minutes, other times it’s a simple writing ritual of gratitude for what I am feeling right in that moment.
That might seem like a lot to you, but if you break it down into bite size chunks they are all very doable. And the biggest take away, is I never beat myself up if I miss out on something.
Lunchtime
Lunchtime I stop working. Full stop! I refuse to work while I eat. This is me time. My time of quiet if i’m at home, or if i’m out it’s my time to detach from any work demands. I also, take time to get back outdoors. Quite often it’s a quick play at the park with Luna, but if i’m travelling I might go for a walk to clear my head and to breathe in fresh air.
Afternoon
Afternoon time I take a break from working and I meditate. This is most often my creative time where ideas come to me. But it’s also my refresh time, where I can let go of any stressors that have come up during the first half of my day. If I need a snack I eat a piece of fruit, or one of my energy balls and I drink lots of water with lemon or a citrus essential oil.
Dinnertime
Dinnertime is family time. We have no phones at the table and we sit down to eat together. Serena started a meal time tradition of checking in. We label our day either a bud, blossom or thorn depending how the day went. We give 1-2 reasons why and if there was anything we could have done to improve the day.
Evening
Evening’s are my quiet time. I love to cuddle with my girls, read them a story. Quite often I fall asleep reading, but this is also a critical time I spend with the love of my life. Healthy is more than what you eat. It’s how you nourish you mind, body and spirit. Optimal health comes from living a well balanced life, and having a wellness approach in all areas of your life. As a momma and entrepreneur I need to balance those responsibilities with my femininity. My hubby and I cherish quality adult time and don’t take it for granted. It takes effort from both of us to commit to our relationship and believe me when our relationship is strong and in a state of flow we both feel so much happier. Ultimately happiness feeds into the quality of our overall health.
Don’t think of me as perfect. What I’ve shared is ideal and 99% of time is how my day flows. But I’m human just like you, I have a career, home and general life responsibilities, not to mention a medically fragile daughter who is unpredictable.
“Healthy is more than what you eat. It’s how you nourish you mind, body and spirit.”
There is no one size fits all approach
We are all unique individuals, with very different needs and health concerns. Our bio-individuality is what makes us perfectly imperfect. There is no one size fits all approach to what healthy looks like. And this is the number one reason why most people fall off the diet wagon. Some of my clients have come from a mindset of a wanting a quick fix, or having spent most of their adult life binging on all the latest diet fads –– trying and then failing when it didn’t work out how they expected.
Trends are not long term solutions and don’t offer lifelong sustainable practices.
Quick fix approaches are just that. They are are short term and don’t provide lifelong solutions. They don’t help create new neural pathways where better informed choices and habits are created.
You already have a pretty good idea what words for you mind, body and spirit. You know how you feel after eating whole foods vs fast food. You’ve already uncovered what foods work for your body and what daily practices best serve your mental and emotional well being.
Think of your health from a unique perspective. Your unique health approach can be fully tailored to meet your wellness needs. You want to make conscious, sustainable and balanced choices that become part of your daily routine. Just like brushing your teeth.
Feel empowered to provide space to make educated decisions on what is best for your health and the health of your loved ones.
