Transforming your home into a wellness sanctuary

No matter what the season, there is no better time to get a jump start on transforming your home into a Wellness Sanctuary. I’m talking about going way beyond a typical kitchen cabinet clean out.

What do you picture when you think of a wellness sanctuary? I think of lots of white space, clean clutter free rooms, fresh scents, plants and lots of natural light.

When you create a wellness sanctuary with these simple steps you will transform your home into one you’ll always want to go home to.

Action Steps:

  • Perform a deep clean: Treat yourself and hire a housekeeper to give your house a deep clean. It’s imperative they use all non-toxic products so don’t be afraid to ask.  Look at all the ingredients in your cleaning supplies and toss any with harsh, toxic and harmful chemicals. Everyday household cleaners typically contain a mirage of highly toxic and harmful chemicals you don’t want to breathing in or getting in your skin. This is an absolute must if you have any fur babies in your house, kiddos, or suffer from any medical complications. It can be much cheaper to make your own household cleaners using products you probably already have in the cupboards. White vinegar, baking soda, rubbing alcohol, castile soap, essential oils and distilled water are the basic 6 ingredients you need to maintain a low toxic household.Mix a little lavender, lemon, or lemongrass oil with distilled water and you have a simple kitchen and surface cleaner.
  • Clean your carpets: Look for commercial organic carpet cleaners who use non-toxic products. Did you know your carpets have dust mites that live in them. Yuck right? These microscopic bugs can cause allergies and other illnesses.
  • Get fresh air: Open your windows when you sleep at night. This supports a good night’s sleep and helps reduce the number of toxins floating around in the air. Did you know we are exposed to more airborne toxins inside our home vs outside? This is commonly due to the products we bring inside our home. As a consumer YOU can choose exactly what you purchase and how it affects your health and wellness.
  • Energy clearing: We all have times in our lives where negative energy seems to follow us everywhere we go. Burning Sage otherwise known as “Sage cleansing or Energy Cleansing” is a simple and effective way to remove toxic energy that may have followed you into your home. Sage is an efficient way to clear up airborne bacteria in any space while also disinfecting the air. If you are new to working with sage, you can find sage kits easily on amazon, I love the beautiful Abalone shells that come with most kits. Sage smudging is like taking an energetic shower, the smoke actually changes the ionic composition of the air and can reduce our stress response.
  • Add life to your home with plants: Indoor plants significantly reduce the amount of toxins in the air. Since Americans spend the majority of their time indoors, healthy air quality should be a priority. Look for English Ivy, Bamboo Palm, Dragon Tree, Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, Spider plant, Gerbera Daisy and Peace Lily. These plants aid in the removal of pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide.

“Clear out the junk”

  • Clear out all the junk: get rid of the stuff you no longer use, and de-clutter your living space. Purge your closets, office space, that “one drawer” which houses a bit of everything, and your bathroom cabinet – read more about removing toxic self care products here.
  • Eliminate toxic chemicals in favour of essential oils: Swap paraffin candles for candles made with 100% soy, beeswax, coconut wax, hemp oil, or some combination that doesn’t contain any paraffin. Use a diffuser rather than traditional room sprays. Citrus oils provides a fresh, invigorating feeling. Mint is a refreshing scent to start the day with, while Lavender is calming and soothing. Your health will thank you!
  • Take off your shoes: before you walk on carpets or rugs as they can bring in pesticides, toxins, and other unwanted nasties into your home.

Remember to laugh, hug and love those you live with to increase the good vibes in your home.
