Your Must Have Healthy Habits Shopping List (FREE DOWNLOAD)

Imagine walking into your kitchen to find everything you could possibly need to whip up a healthy, delicious and satisfying meal. How awesome does that sound?

Whether you have friends who stopped by unannounced or your children have a playdate, you don’t have to worry because you know you have the staples to prepare a dish in no time.

One of my all time favourite activities is to go grocery shopping. I know kinda crazy huh? When i’m out of town, I absolutely have to peruse the local supermarket and outdoor markets for fresh and healthy food items.

While it’s fun to try new foods and bring goodies home from other countries, I honestly tend to stick to the basics when i’m home. I shop for a few days at a time, this way I know exactly what’s inside my fridge.  It stresses me out to have a packed fridge and this way I know I’m eating the freshest produce possible. Shopping more frequently actually saves me money, this way I’m less likely to be tossing out old forgotten about and rotten items.

My Kitchen Tips:

Stock your pantry

I like to keep all my basics on hands, this way I am likely to have something to whip up for meals in a pinch.

Reuse mason jars

As often as possible I take my own glass storage jars with me and shop from the bulk section. This is both a cost saving tip and a beautiful way to reduce your carbon footprint. Here are more of my plastic and waste reducing tips.

Store infrequently used nuts and seeds in the fridge or freezer

I store the majority of nuts and seeds in mason jars inside my pantry. For the ones I use less often I keep those stored in glass jars in my fridge – this keeps them fresher for longer.  And, the occasional nut or seed (Typically Brazil and Pine nuts) I store in the freezer (extends shelf life to 1 year). I recommend storing flax and hemp seeds, coconut and almond flour in your refrigerator. If you purchase Bee pollen, Spirulina or matcha be sure to keep these in the fridge to preserve their flavours.

Fill your shopping 50% full of produce

My basic rule for shopping is to fill the majority of my shopping cart with fresh produce. Being mostly vegan (I do consume local bee pollen and honey for their nutritional content) my diet is full of fresh vegetables and fruit. I find by stocking my pantry with basic staples and regularly buying fresh produce, I can always throw together a meal in a pinch.

Buy frozen greens (especially when on sale)

I keep a couple bags of frozen greens in my freezer to create a new meal out of any leftovers. You can transition most soups, bowls or sauce into a whole new dish just by adding greens the following day.  Make sure you make a big batch so you get at least 2 meals out of 1. This is one of my favourite health and time saving tips I share with all my nutrition clients.

I’ve created the Healthy Shopping List as a tool to help support healthy habits while transitioning to a plant based diet. By no means am I suggesting you purchase everything at one go, but allow it to motivate you as you prep for the week. And by no means am I saying you have to go vegan. You know what your body needs much better than I do. Science is showing without any shadow of a doubt that consuming the majority of your foods from plants is the best form of preventative medicine.

Print it out, keep it on your fridge and tick the box next to each item you need.
